UPWARDS, a cutting-edge European project for global understanding of Mars

To prepare the future mission to Mars ( as e.g. the ESA mission ExoMars), a consortium of seven European scientific institutions, coordinated by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía (IAA-CSIC, Spain), will develop new analytical techniques to exploit data of existing missions to Mars.

The project called UPWARDS: Understanding Planet Mars With Advanced Remote-sensing Datasets and Synergistic Studies, has ROB and BISA as Belgian partners. The European Commission has described the science to be deployed in this project as ‘excellent’ and has granted funding of over €2 million under the Horizon 2020.

Over a period of three years, the consortium will review and analyse the data gathered by former missions to the red planet.
